UNCONSCIOUS-NEST - Bhutan

he Phobjikha Valley is one of the most beautiful destinations in Bhutan. It is the winter home to a group of world-threatened black-necked Cranes or Grenadiers (Grus Nigrocollis) arriving every year from the Tibetan Plateau. Situated near the center of Bhutan, Gangtey is in a remarkably attractive glacial valley called Phobjikha.

Prayer flags, found in many parts of the Himalayas, are an important part of Buddhist culture. These flags can be seen scattered all over the mountainous regions of Tibet (China), Nepal, Bhutan and in parts of India. Prayer flags are of great importance to the people of these regions.

An interesting aspect of prayer flags is that they are not used in other branches of Buddhism. This is due to the possibility that the flags have their origins in Bön, a religion practiced in Tibet before the existence of Buddhism.

Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to the gods, which is a common misconception; instead, Tibetans believe that prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread goodwill and compassion throughout the space that fills it.
